Best time of year to sell used stuff, by category

Winter coats, patio furniture, holiday toys, and back-to-school electronics each have their own demand window — and it’s not the season you’d guess. Here’s when to list each category, sourced from eBay’s own seasonal data, the National Retail Federation, and Circana’s toy-industry research.

Is there really a best time of year to sell used stuff?

Yes, but it depends entirely on the category, not the calendar in general. Retailers and marketplaces track four big demand windows: winter/holiday (October–December), back-to-school (August–September), spring outdoor (March–May), and a large group of evergreen categories where timing barely moves the needle at all. Listing an item while its category is actively in demand means more buyers see it and prices hold closer to what similar items are actually selling for. Listing off-season means competing for attention from the handful of buyers shopping early, which usually means a lower price or a longer wait.

When's the best time to sell holiday gifts, toys, and kids' items?

October through December. The National Retail Federation forecasts winter-holiday retail spending of $1.01–$1.02 trillion in November and December, or roughly $890 per person — and Circana’s toy-industry data shows the second half of the year accounts for over 60% of annual U.S. toy sales, concentrated around the holidays. eBay’s own seasonal guide marks Black Friday (November 27) and Cyber Monday (November 30) as the start of the peak buying window, with Christmas Eve as the single busiest shopping day. List toys, games, collectibles, and gift-appropriate electronics by early November so they’re visible before that window opens.

When should you sell winter coats, boots, and cold-weather gear?

Early-to-mid fall, roughly September through November, ahead of the same holiday surge. eBay’s seasonal guide treats the Black Friday-through-Christmas stretch as one of the busiest windows of the year across categories, and cold-weather apparel rides that same curve since coats, boots, and outerwear are common gifts as well as practical purchases once temperatures drop. Listing in September, before the weather actually turns, means your listing has time to build search visibility before peak buyer intent hits in October and November — by the time everyone needs a coat, yours is already found.

When's the best time to sell patio furniture and garden or outdoor gear?

Spring, roughly March through May. eBay’s own “Spring trends in sales” guide reports that 72% of US adults spend significant time in their backyard or outdoor space starting in spring, and that demand shows up directly in buying: 57% purchase gardening supplies, 45% buy home and garden décor, and 35% invest in patio furniture, fire pits, and other outdoor-relaxation pieces. List a patio set, grill, or garden tools in February or early March, before the season starts — the same logic as winter coats, just on the opposite half of the calendar.

When's the best time to sell laptops, tablets, and other electronics?

Late July through September, driven by back-to-school demand. The NRF’s 2026 back-to-school survey found families with K-12 students plan to spend a record $863.86 on average, including $293.11 on electronics alone — $14.7 billion nationally — as part of a record $146.8 billion in combined K-12 and college back-to-school spending. A used laptop, tablet, or set of headphones listed in early-to-mid August catches that wave directly; list too late and you’re competing with new-school-year retail sales instead of riding ahead of them.

Does timing matter for everything you sell, or only seasonal categories?

Only the genuinely seasonal categories above swing this hard. OfferUp’s 2025 Recommerce Report found 93% of Americans bought something secondhand in the past year and 54% sold one — and outside apparel, holiday goods, outdoor gear, and back-to-school items, that demand is spread fairly evenly across the calendar. Everyday furniture, tools, kitchenware, most electronics outside August–September, and collectibles don’t have a strong seasonal curve; for those, photo quality and a price grounded in real sold data matter far more than the month you list in. Save seasonal timing strategy for the categories that actually have one.

How far ahead of peak season should you list a seasonal item?

About 4–6 weeks ahead of when buyers actually need the item, not when the season officially starts on a calendar. Winter coats and boots: list by September, before the first cold snap. Patio furniture and garden gear: list by late February or early March, before the weekend everyone suddenly wants to be outside. Holiday toys and gift items: list by early November, ahead of Black Friday. Electronics for back-to-school: list by early-to-mid August. That lead time lets a listing accumulate search visibility and buyer interest before the peak window opens, instead of getting buried once everyone else lists at the same time — the same principle behind starting a moving sale weeks before the truck shows up.

What if you've got items from several different seasons to sell right now?

Sell them anyway — a slightly softer market beats an item sitting in a closet for eight months waiting for its ideal window, and pricing from real sold data (not a seasonal guess) recovers most of the difference either way. Reclaim removes the research step entirely: snap a photo of anything, in any season, and it identifies the item, prices it from real-time eBay sold-listing data, and publishes the listing to eBay and Facebook Marketplace in one tap — so timing a listing well doesn’t require tracking four different seasonal calendars yourself.

The short version

List cold-weather gear in September, patio and garden items in February or March, holiday toys and gifts by early November, and electronics in early-to-mid August — each about 4–6 weeks ahead of its actual demand spike. Everything else sells on price and photos more than timing. For more on pricing whatever you’re selling right now, see our room-by-room decluttering guide or the full library of selling guides.
