How do eBay selling fees work in 2026?

eBay charges two fees on every sale: a final value fee — a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, shipping charged to the buyer, and the sales tax eBay collects — and a flat per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less or $0.40 on orders over $10. In most categories the final value fee is 13.6% on the portion of the sale up to $7,500 and 2.35% on anything above. Because the tax counts toward the total, categories with all-or-nothing tiers (handbags switch from 15% to 9% over $2,000, jewelry over $5,000) tip based on the taxed total, not the sticker price. Listing is free for your first 250 listings each month — heavy equipment is the notable exception, with a $20 insertion fee per listing. If you promote a listing, the ad rate you choose comes out on top of everything else, but only when the item actually sells.

Worked example: a $100 sale with $8.50 shipping

Say you sell a game console for $100 with free shipping in a standard category, no promotion, no sales tax, and pay $8.50 for the label. The fee base is $100 (item price plus $0 buyer-paid shipping plus $0 tax). Final value fee: 13.6% × $100 = $13.60. Per-order fee: the order is over $10, so $0.40. Total eBay fees: $14.00 — exactly 14% of the sale. Subtract your $8.50 label and you keep $77.50. Now add a 7% sales tax state: the buyer pays $107, the fee base becomes $107, and the final value fee rises to 13.6% × $107 = $14.55 — total fees $14.95 and your net drops to $76.55, even though the extra $7 went straight to the state. The same math at a 3% promoted-listing rate on the untaxed sale adds $3.00 of ad fees and drops your net to $74.50 — worth it only if promotion actually made the sale happen.

eBay fee FAQ

How much does eBay take from a sale in 2026?

For most categories, eBay takes a final value fee of 13.6% of the total amount of the sale (item price plus shipping charged to the buyer plus sales tax), up to $7,500 per item, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less or $0.40 on orders over $10. On a $100 sale with free shipping, that is $13.60 + $0.40 = $14.00, leaving you $86.00 before your own shipping cost. Category rates range from 3% (heavy equipment) to 15.3% (books, movies, music). These rates apply to sellers without an eBay Store; Store subscribers pay lower rates in many categories.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. eBay's final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, any handling charges, the shipping cost collected from the buyer, and sales tax. Charging $95 + $5 shipping produces the same fee as charging $100 with free shipping, so raising your shipping charge does not dodge the fee.

Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?

Yes — this is the part that surprises sellers most. The sales tax eBay collects from the buyer counts toward the total amount of the sale, so the final value fee percentage is applied to it even though eBay remits the tax to the state and you never receive it. In a state with 7% tax, a $100 free-shipping sale has a $107 fee base, so the 13.6% fee is $14.55 instead of $13.60. The tax total also counts toward category tier thresholds, like the $2,000 boundary in handbags. Use the calculator's sales-tax field to see the real number for your state.

What is the eBay per-order fee?

On every order, eBay adds a flat per-order fee on top of the percentage final value fee: $0.30 for orders with a total of $10.00 or less, and $0.40 for orders over $10.00. One exception: athletic shoes that sell for $150 or more (8% final value fee) are not charged the per-order fee.

How much are eBay promoted listings?

Promoted Listings (general strategy) charges an ad rate you choose — commonly 2% to 15% of the total sale amount — and only when the item sells through a promoted placement. It is optional and comes out of your proceeds on top of the final value fee, which is why the calculator has a separate promoted-listing field.

Are there eBay listing fees?

Sellers without a Store get 250 zero-insertion-fee listings each month; beyond that, insertion fees are $0.35 per listing. Most casual sellers never pay an insertion fee. A few categories differ — for example, heavy equipment listings carry a $20 insertion fee (the calculator includes it for that category), and Guitars & Basses listings are always free to list.

Do eBay Store subscribers pay lower fees?

Yes. With a Basic Store or above, the final value fee in most categories drops from 13.6% to 12.7% (on the portion up to $2,500), and some categories drop further — cell phones are 9.35% for Store subscribers, for example. A Basic Store costs a monthly subscription, so it only pays off at volume. This calculator uses the rates for sellers without a Store.
