Shipping used items without losing your profit
A 2026 USPS pricing change made oversized, lightly packed boxes measurably more expensive. Here’s how dimensional weight actually works, when free shipping beats charging the buyer, and which carrier and box save real money on what you sell.

How much does shipping really cut into your resale profit?
More than most sellers plan for. USPS Ground Advantage retail postage starts at $7.90 for a lightweight package shipped a short distance, and a July 12, 2026 USPS pricing change raised the dimensional-weight bill on big, light boxes by roughly 19%. On a $20 sale, shipping that isn’t priced in advance can quietly eat a third or more of what you thought you’d net. The fix isn’t a carrier trick — it’s weighing and measuring the item before you set your price, not after you’ve already promised free shipping.
What is dimensional weight, and why did it just get pricier?
Dimensional (DIM) weight prices a package by its size, not just its scale weight, so carriers aren’t paid based on air. For any package over 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), USPS charges whichever is greater: the actual weight or length × width × height ÷ 139, with any fractional inch rounded up to the next whole inch. Since July 12, 2026, that divisor dropped from 166 to 139 — matching FedEx and UPS — which raises the billable weight on large, lightly packed boxes by about 19–20%. Ship in a box sized to the item, not the box you had lying around, and you avoid most of the increase.
Should you offer free shipping or make the buyer pay separately?
eBay’s own Seller Center notes buyers are more likely to choose a free-shipping listing over one with a shipping charge even when the total cost is identical — and the final value fee is charged on the full total either way, so there’s no fee penalty to folding shipping into the price. eBay’s general guidance: use free or flat-rate shipping for light, low-variance items where cost barely changes by distance; use calculated shipping for heavy or bulky items where the true cost swings a lot by buyer location. For most things you’d photograph and list from home, free shipping priced into the item wins on conversion.
Which carrier and box actually save you money?
USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes are exempt from dimensional-weight pricing up to 70 lbs, which makes them the right call for anything heavy and dense in a small footprint — tools, books, cast iron cookware. USPS Ground Advantage is the default for anything under a pound, priced by ounce tier, and is cheapest when the package matches the item — a poly mailer for clothing, not a leftover box with padding to spare. The combination that got measurably more expensive in 2026 is exactly the one to avoid: a big, mostly empty box around a small, light item.
Does Facebook Marketplace shipping work the same way?
No — Facebook’s Help Center confirms a flat 10% selling fee (minimum $0.80) on the item price, shipping, and tax combined for any order shipped through Marketplace checkout, but $0 in fees for local pickup paid outside Facebook’s system. That changes the calculus by item type: heavy or bulky items should go local-pickup-only on Facebook Marketplace to skip both the dimensional-weight bill and the 10% cut entirely, while small, higher-value items can absorb Facebook’s shipping fee the same way they’d absorb eBay’s.
What shipping mistakes actually wreck a reseller's margin?
The costliest one is pricing an item before you’ve weighed and measured it — you’re guessing at your real payout, not calculating it. Next is over-boxing: extra void space and packing material can push a package into a bigger dimensional-weight tier for no reason. Third is ignoring the July 2026 rounding rule — a box measuring 12.2 inches is now billed as 13 inches, not 12, so a package that used to just clear a size break might not anymore. Last is paying retail post-office-counter rates instead of discounted online labels through eBay, USPS.com, or a marketplace’s own label tool, which are routinely cheaper than walking up to the counter. Run the numbers with our eBay fee calculator or Facebook Marketplace fee calculator before you commit to a shipping method.
The short version
Weigh and measure before you price, box to the item instead of the box you have lying around, and match the carrier to the item — flat rate for heavy and dense, Ground Advantage for light and small, local pickup for anything bulky on Facebook Marketplace. Pricing an item without knowing its real shipping cost is how a profitable sale turns into a wash. Reclaim doesn’t ship the box for you, but it prices every listing from real eBay sold data the moment you take a photo, so you know what a fair price looks like before shipping costs eat into it.
